Titel: Music collection (mpd and which front-end?)  BeitragVerfasst am: 31.07.2006, 09:05 Uhr

I'm considering converting my music CD collection into flac format and having it on an old networked celeron 566 (or PIII 800) which will be connected to a sound system.

Is anyone here running this kind of music setup?

So far a little searching has me leaning towards:

* crip for ripping looks perfect:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/sound/crip

* mpd for playing the (flac) music collection:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/sound/mpd

But which front end?
Console?
mpc http://packages.debian.org/unstable/sound/mpc
Web-based?
Jinzora http://www.jinzora.com/demos/standalone/slick.php
ampache http://www.ampache.org/demo/
other??

my vinyl albums need converting too but that will have to be another project .... Geschockt

Cheers
rob

ncmpc is a nice front-end.

I use flacs quite a bit and have my collection sorted into playlists on amarok. It is extremely good. I use the xine engine and amarok 1.4.
To use amarok with flacs make sure you have the latest xine lib installed 9 (1.1.2.)
apt-get install libxine1

XMMS will also play flacs and then you can use my kanotix skin. Winken
You may need: apt-get install xmms-flac

Thanks for all the feedback, links and tips!

I put together a test setup using an old and unfortunately too small HD. Although limited it still worked very nicely Smilie and mpd etc. is exactly what I need to manage my music collection.

To keep it simple I used ncmpc, and intend to keep using it, as the front end on the local box. Advanced control/editing (when I get the new HD) will be done remotely using one of the web front ends (like mp3act).

An interesting find was Bill's Jammin' Jukebox, a java mpd client, which has all the usual features plus the ability to easily loop portions (handy if you're trying to work out a difficult guitar solo etc.)

Cheers

BTW does any one know of any laws that would prevent me from converting my vinyl LP's to digital??
