I just installed the easter-rc4 and am missing kpackage. From reading in the forum after opening adept I don't want to use it. I did try and wheen I changed something to install and then changed another, the first reversed. Anyway, I went to root konsole and did "apt-get install kpackage". This was the response:

"root@MainKanotix:~# apt-get install kpackage
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kpackage: Depends: kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.3-1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages"

I then tried to get kdelibs4c2a but it referred me to dkelibs-data and when I tried all three this is what I got:

"root@MainKanotix:~# apt-get install kpackage kdelibs4c2a kdelibs-data
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
kdelibs-data is already the newest version.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kdelibs4c2a: Depends: kdelibs-data (< 4:3.5.4) but 4:3.5.4-1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages"

What should I do now? How do I get kpackage so I can install some software?

Thanks for any help,

John

You have to wait a week or so, kde is transitioning from 3.5.3 to 3.5.4

You don't need kpackage to install software, just use apt.

h2,

Damn, you're fast. so I shouldn't try to get any kde stuff for a week or so? How will I know when I can? I know I can use apt but I don't know what I want, that was why I wanted kpackage, I could "shop" for stuff.

Thanks,

John

You shouldn't do much of anything this week, and definitely nothing kde related, to use apt, just do it like this:

apt-get install <your package> -s

replace <your package> with the package name you want to install

the -s will simulate what will happen, so you can see before. If many things happen, don't do it. If only one or two packages install, and none are removed, it should be safe.

I don't know why Kano seems to like kpackage so much and does not include synaptic instead. I believe you can install synatpic and not get 'hit' with the KDE mess going on right now.

Because kpackage I think is more versatile, you can use it to examine dependencies in deb packages, files in packages, all kinds of stuff.

I can give you three ways to know.

1. Go to KDE-3.5.4 is trickling in LIKE A EARTHQUAKE and look for the bottom "Watch this topic for replies", and wait 'till etorix says is okay (You'll get a e-mail everytime someone replies to that post)

2. Use a RSS reader and add the feed "kanotix.com General News" and wait until someone post that is okay to d-u

3. Go to irc://irc.freenode.org #kanotix and read the topic of the channel
