Actually no, phonon is just a tiny wrapper to give KDE packages a consistent abstraction of the sound layer in use, it can use xine, jackd, gstreamer etc. as backend - without requiring any application to have direct support for all of these. How would you implement this requirement otherwise? There is not one single audio backend in linux, gstreamer is still plagued by serious bugs, xine quite general purpose but not that good in the latency and legal department, jackd an absolute requirement for advanced users - phonon will provide a consistent API/ ABI for applications to use, independent of the real backend in use.

Ah yes it looks like phonon will eventually become a step in the right direction. Now if KDE could just lose the win32 style UI (and kill off a few of the many processes it requires to run) it might become usable. Smilie

How about getting the v1.0.11-3/5 alsa stuff patched into an rc5 so we can get on with beating up the rest of this puppy? (Maybe not. See UPDATE below.)

Some of the rest seems very prone to freezing up, but it's hard to prove what/where/when/why because it's taking me ALL DAY to boot the CD, or I have to intervene thus:

Booting Kanotix 2006 Easter RC4 Live with VIA 8233 sound on AC97 Controller / AMD Sempron 2400+ 1665MHz / Award BIOS 6.00PG leads during <KDE-initialising-peripherals> to a loop of "sound server fatal error."

At this point, pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace brings up a dialog box which says that KNotify crashed while instantiating KNotify, and asks if one would like to disable aRts. Obviously, at this point, one would, but who knows which of the other instabilities have been induced by this intervention? Possibly all of them: frequent Konqueror crashes being the most disruptive.

UPDATE: Installing RC4 and updating those three alsa/linux-sound-base packages hasn't helped either of my VIA-sound-chip machines, so they're now running the latest Mepis (6.0-rc3), because the (K)ubuntu repositories are obviously not suffering the borkedness of bleeding-edge-Debian right now. Sorry Kano, but these machines have work to do.

Off-topic: klik is A Good Thing. It's not installed with 2006-RC4. Please let's have it back, if possible. Everything else (that I would propose for a base install) is right there ... when it boots.
