Maybe it is just me, but the past week or so there has been very long latency between pages in the forum (English). But it is not 'always'. Sometimes, rarely, it snaps. But most often there is a 7 to 20 second delay between clicking a post and when it pops up on the screen.

I anyone else getting slow and eratic performance from the Kanotix forum site? Where is the site located (hosted)? DE? I'm in Sacramento, CA. Maybe there is a bottleneck between me and the server? I'm on SBC/Yahoo DSL (which has been very solid past two years... I recommend it) at 3.0 mb for $29/mo... although I only get about 2.4 down.)

I've deleted Kanotix cookies and cache a few times. No help.

The ping below looks good so I can only speculate that the database server for the postNuke site is impacted?

hi al3,
up to yesterday the latency for me was ok, since slam has moved the forum to a new server in düsseldorf/germany. i live in berlin, some 400miles away. yesterday i thought it was slow because of the weekend, but cant be that slow.
my ping:
64 bytes from vs161192.vserver.de (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=2 ttl=55 time=498 ms
64 bytes from vs161192.vserver.de (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=3 ttl=55 time=705 ms
64 bytes from vs161192.vserver.de (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=4 ttl=55 time=895 ms
64 bytes from vs161192.vserver.de (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=5 ttl=55 time=560 ms

as you see, its worse than yours. since yesterday it takes 30-45 secs to open a thread. before max. 5 sec.
i tried with mozilla-firefox 1.07 and firefox 1.5 no difference.
no idea, whats causing this.

Same here! The problem with being directed to the wrong site is gone though.
S L O W about covers it and the web site is not reading my cookies, as it comes up in the wrong language and I'm not being automatically logged on.

It would be really nice if web sites going through a transformation period would just put a message on the first page, "We are experiencing problems". The forum has gone through some really nice changes in the past few weeks -- problems are expected -- I'd just like to know!

Also most of the time we don't have any problems, and the new server is pretty much faster than the old one, we still have performance problems with the sql-database at rush hours twice a week.
We could easily fix that anytime by adding more memory to the server, but please allow some more days to test and find out if we can't improve the php-code of our cms - without a stupid hardware upgrade.
Thanks!
Greetings,
Chris

Well, I don't want to be rude, and I certainly have the utmost respect for the work everybody does in relationship to Kanotix -- and it is my very favourite Linux Distro..... but I have been having problems with the forum site for weeks.

Runs just fine today today though - a treat. I doubt it is me, as other forums I visit on an almost daily basis are not causing me the same grief. Maybe something it is happening from your point in Europe to the west coast of Canada. As I said in a previous post, the improvement in the look and function of the forum is TERRIFIC and I can just imagine the great work (and time) that has been invested.

I just expect some notice if there might be some growing pains. To just ignore it is just so MicroSoft like -- gosh, I can't believe that slipped out of my mouth. Sorry slam.

Chris,

I have been having problems since the site moved so I expect many others have also but do not want to comment on an open forum. As said elsewhere in the this thread we all understand and are sympathetic of the problems moving and running a great site in more than one language but it would be nice to be kept informed. On the same lines there is a notice warning not to upgrade on the news page but it has been OK for two days but no update so far. This is just meant to be positive feedback.

Ok, tweaked several caching options and duplicated memory on the server 2 days ago. Untill we have more than 500 visitors simultanously crawling the forum, there should be no slow down any more - even at peak times.
The only thing I still have on my list are additional name servers für the US and Asia in order to fasten DNS-resolution from there.
Greetings,
Chris

Chris,

Speed seems to be back to normal, and I see the note on the news page, thanks.

Still having latency problems with the forums. Of all the web boards I use, this one is by far the slowest. However the ping looks good.:

al@kano1:~$ ping -c6 www.kanotix.com
PING kanotix.com (62.75.161.192) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from kanotix.com (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=1 ttl=45 time=167 ms
64 bytes from kanotix.com (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=2 ttl=45 time=167 ms
64 bytes from kanotix.com (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=3 ttl=45 time=167 ms
64 bytes from kanotix.com (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=4 ttl=45 time=167 ms
64 bytes from kanotix.com (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=5 ttl=45 time=167 ms
64 bytes from kanotix.com (62.75.161.192): icmp_seq=6 ttl=45 time=167 ms

--- kanotix.com ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 6 received, 0% packet loss, time 5004ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 167.073/167.416/167.799/0.481 ms

My bet is that the database on this server is overloaded.

Al
