I have had experience of having to re install windoz when changing motherboards , and thought I was safe with linux , but it seems I cant access Kanotix .

I get /bin /dash: cant access tty job control urned off
/bin /sat:/sys/block/hda/hda2/dev no such file or directory

can I fix this up using the live disk ? and how ?

thanks

Boot with your kanotix cd, once to the desktop, click on the "fish" icon on the kicker > kanotix installer, once that pops up you should be in the Welcome menu put a tick in the very last option Recover an existing Kanotix-HD-Installation, then click Next.

Ok, now the Root-Partition is the only thing you change, make it look like

/dev/hda2 (or whatever kanotix is installed to)

press NEXT, it will take a few minutes and will let you know when done, then reboot and your grub menu should be back with windows and kanotix (if windows is installed)

You may also try this

Open a terminal,(in live cd) login as root (su)

type:

mount /dev/hda2 /media/hda2 (hit enter)

type:

grub-install --recheck --no-floppy --root-directory=/media/hda2 /dev/hda

Assuming that kanotix is installed to hda2

I tried the first part Kanotix-installer
it tell me that Grub
/dev/hdc2
Root Parition

and I get an error

Grub Install Returned 1 as error code

When I try to boot to the HDD I get /bin/sat: /sys/block/hda/hda2/dev no such file or directory

Do I have to change /dev/hdc2 to /hda/hda2 ?

thanks

I decided I had enough backed up so ended up doing a re install , thanks for the info , I would like a way to repair this if it happens again or at least a way to repair the partition . I expected the trouble with windoz but not linux Smilie
