Ok, check this out - because this is really weird. When I use Synaptic for updates, the terminal output is unreadable.

But if copy/paste the terminal output to a .txt file - voila - everything looks just dandy! Lachen

Code:
(Reading database ... 120717 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing linux-image-2.6.17.4 ...
Running postrm hook /sbin/update-grub .
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17.7
Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

The link /vmlinuz.old is a damaged link
Removing symbolic link vmlinuz.old
Unless you used the optional flag in lilo,
you may need to re-run lilo
Purging configuration files for linux-image-2.6.17.4 ...

Successfully applied all changes. You can close the window now.

This problem is not killing me or anything, but it would be kind of nice to know whats going on anyway. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks.

The solution to your problem should be found in Synaptic's menu Settings - Preferences - Columns and Fonts.

There, choose a custom terminal font and select the checkbox to use it.

(On my machine, "Terminal Regular 8" works - while the default setting do not ...).

even better: abandon synaptic and use apt in console for updates.
