I'm thnking about upgrading to a dual core 64Bit CPU and
appropriate motherboard.

I intend to continue running 32bit Kanotix for the moment.

I'm naive about these things but would it be possible to install
the Easter single core Kanotix on the upgraded machine and
upgrade to a smp kernel at a later date?

I believe that easter will install with dual core support out of the box, somebody correct me if that's wrong

clubex,
sure you can, easter preview brings a smp kernel along, but you can upgrade to a more current smp kernel at any time.

Many thanks guys.
That solved my main problem

Now to the hardest part. Spending the cash!

clubex: wait a little while, amd has cut prices, but the new prices are not in the market yet.

You will be able to get an amd x2 3800 for under US $200 quite soon, almost half the current price. That's for socket 939, similar price cuts I believe for socket am2

Thanks again guys.

I'm in the UK so "next Monday" probably translates to "sometime
just before Xmas" and still be expensive. So I may not wait.

In germany the new am2 are out since july 17th boards and cpu's. In U.K. should be the same.
But with all new technology I'ld wait til X-mas to buy this.

If you need a new board right now!, go out for a 939-board and cpu.

I'd more or less decided before my first post to go for
an AMD 3800+ dual core and 939 board.

Another problem may be my PSU. Is my 300W PSU
man enough for the above combination plus 1GB RAM,
and GeForce2 MX/MX 400?

If not can anyone recommend a cheap (finance is short)
but good value PSU?
schnorrer - 22.07.2006, 12:31 Uhr
Titel:
not realy. Depends on combined-power-outpup 3.3V + 5V >160W.
A good PSU Enermax, BeQuiet, Tagan....
but no! noname. not stable enough.

Let me know the tech.-data of your old-PSU and age. you find the info at one side of the PSU.

Also check the ATX connector of your PSU. Newer socket 939 boards require 24 pins, not 20 as with the old boards.

I also recommend Be quiet, Enermax and Tagan. They sell at a premium, though.

I'll check out the PSU info during the next downtime.

AMD processor price appears to have fallen by almost 50% in the UK.

clubex: think about buying a complete case, you can get an antec sonata II for about $100 US, and it comes with I think a very good 400 watt powersupply. And the case is very quiet, whisper quiet if you get a quiet cpu fan, with copper heatsink. Buying that powersupply alone would costs almost the same.

Thanks guys.

schnorrer: 3.3V + 5V >150W on my present PSU. So I need
a new PSU.

H2: Over here (UK) an Antec Sonata II costs £70-£90 whereas
I can get the SmartPower 2.0 450W PSU for £45. Money is short
so I'll probably go for the PSU.
schnorrer - 23.07.2006, 13:10 Uhr
Titel:
@clubex: your PSU got 3.3V + 5V > 150W No new PSU is needed or is the Combined less than 160W?
clubex - 23.07.2006, 14:54 Uhr

schnorrer: Apologies for my typo.

Ratings on the side of my present PSU
+3.3v 20A plus +5v 30A 150W
+12v 16A 144W
-5V 0.5A 2.5W
-12V 0.8A 6W

It also has 20pin sockets and no CPU socket.
So a new PSU is definitely required.
