Networking - AOL & Kanotix... ?

deej - 18.07.2006, 21:10 Uhr
Titel: AOL & Kanotix... ?
Short & sweet:
I've converted someone to Kanotix from That Other
System, only to discover that they are hooked up to
AOL broadband ! As we all know (now !!!) AOL + Linux
are not easy bedfellows... has anyone come up with a solution to this problem ?

With regards,
Deej

P.S.
2006-Easter-RC4 is REALLY good !

Well I did not know anything about AOL (except that they suck) so I asked in #kanotix. Kano actually uses AOL. Here are the responses (unedited).
Zitat:
< slam_> mzilikazi: the aol-installer works fine in wine Winken
< soundscout> slam_: does it?
< soundscout> never brought it to work.
< slam_> mzilikazi: if that was the problem people asked about
< slh> mzilikazi: at least in germany AOL allowed router based access
recently, only downside is the selection of special characters
the user password (afaik), but kano surely knows better Winken
< soundscout> oh... sorry mzilikazi ..
< soundscout> no, you cannot connect from linux to aol.
< slam_> mzilikazi: yes, kano has real 1st hand experience
< soundscout> you can use kopete to use aim..
< Kano> password may only use normal chars and numbers
< soundscout> but to see your bill, you need the aol software.

< slam_> soundscout: "to see your bill" <-- that was a good one Winken
< soundscout> i use vmware to look up my bill. Winken
< soundscout> slam_: i got volume.. i need to have a look sometimes.

So it would seem that it works fine with some special exception. Hope that's of some use. Smilie

Many thanks for that. It would seem that it's time for a bit of a play Sehr glücklich

I sure think that with enough pressure, AOL could port its s/w to Linux. I am sure AOL would be able to get developers in a heartbeat for that project if they ask.

Yes you can use AOL with Linux, I am. I'm in the UK using AOL Broadband through a NIC and a Netgear Modem/Router. I previously used the USB ADSL Modem supplied by AOL, without any problems. Before I splashed out on broadband I was on dial up through an external US Robotics 56 kbps modem.

How you manage that, Geoff? Install the s/w under Wine or cxoffice
