Titel: screensaver question
Hello,

Searched the forum and found a post suggestiing to use:
apt-get update; apt-get install kscreensaver

I did that, signed in as administrator, and got a long list of failures. I tried copying them but they seemed to not save where I directed. Traurig

How/where can I get a screensaver. Realy want a clock one. I saw someone posting about one, so I hope to get that one.

regards,

kscreensaver seems to have been fixed after the last kcontrol upgrade.
ie. kcontrol 4:3.5.3-2 and kscreensaver 4:3.5.3-1

janice21475-

If you installed kscreensaver as root you shouldn't have a problem.

You can select which screensaver you want to use from
Control Center -> Appearance & Themes-> Screensaver

If I remember correctly the clock screensaver is part of the xscreensaver
package. So you would need to install xscreensaver.
You will also need to install kscreensaver-xsavers if you wish to select
the clock saver from the Control Center.

I recommend you also install xscreensaver-gl if only for the fabulous
Lattice(GL) saver (definitely needs 3D acceleration).

Janice,

If that doesn't work for you, or kscreensaver breaks on you in the future, you might want to try what I posted here:

http://kanotix.com/index.php?name=PNphp ... highlight=

I've always had problems with kscreensaver & find xscreensaver much more reliable.

Hope that helps................... Smilie

I have a fresh install of Easter with KDE 3.5.2. Control Center>Appearance & Themes>Screen Saver has nothing there, so I simulated the install to see what would occur and am concerned that the new, removed & upgraded 3.5.3 packages might have an adverse effect. I'm also thinking that if I decide to do this, it should be done via init 3. Advise appreciated...

When you say "Signed in as administrator" do you mean you logged into your desktop as root? If so this is not only unnecessary but also a bad idea. There simply is no need since you can just become root in a shell when you need to. Always log into your desktop as user and never as root.

OK--No big deal--screensavers are a bunch of fluff anyway so screw 'em. X-this, KDE-that, there are a lot more important things to be concerned about, so be bop a loo wop.
