Networking - No internet with 2005-04

I seem to be having a problem with the 2005-04 live CD. When I boot to it I can not access the internet at all. If I boot to the 2005-01 CD my internet connection works fine.

I have tried the network card configuration tool in 2005-04 and told it to use DHCP but still no go. I do not have to do anything when I boot the 2005-01 cd.

I would really like to install Kanotix on my system and I would like to use 2005-04 because of the newer programs that come with it.

Does anyone have any idea on what I should do.

BTW I'm fairly new to linux. I have palyed agound with a couple of different versions like Mandrake and Kubunto but I really like Kanotix.

Thanks,
Corwin

No idea, I get immediatly connected to LAN through 2005-05 Live-CD. So obviously no router problem either, when another Live-edition connects you immediatly to LAN on the same machine.

Ok. Tried easter-rc4 and still having the same problem. 2005-01 will still work fine.

What sort of network card you using? Or are you using a modem to connect to the net?

Sorry. Was hoping that since 2005-01 worked ok that there might just be something quick to fix this.

I have a home built system with an ECS nForce3-A 250 motherboard with onboard NIC.
Motrola cable modem going through SMC hsrdware router. Connections are wired.
AMD Sempron 2800+ processor with 512 Mb of RAM.

Hope this info helps. If there's anything else you need to know please tell me. I do appreciate the help and I really want to get this working.

Thanks,
Corwin

That configuration is supposed to work out of the box, just call netcardconfig after installing and use DHCP or static IPs (DHCP preferred).

I did try the netcardconfig but no go. Can't understand why an older version of Kanotix works and the newer ones don't

You can try this

K-menu --> Kanotix --> Network/Internet -->Network Card Configuration

A pop-up pops up asking you if you want to use DHCP, click yes, another pop-up pops up asking you if you want to use DHCP at startup, click yes, I believe knemo pops up at this point, click defaults (you should be online at this point, if not you can try in a terminal "remove-gateway.sh" without quotes, reboot and do the netcardconfig thing again)

Then open your web browser, type in the router's IP address should be

http://192.168.2.1

In the routers web-interface, click on login-> Home network settings -> click on WAN settings -> Dynamic IP address -> more configuration -> click on clone MAC address and save the settings.

If problems with password either leave it blank or use "smcadmin" or if you already picked one use that

if using a static IP address

web-interface, click on login->home network settings -> WAN -> Static IP -> more configuration -> enter the following values that have been provided by your ISP

IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DNS numbers

Was the onboard NIC detected properly?

hmmm... maybe your problem is that your config is not supported by the newer kernels. I have that problem myself: my Acer Travelmate 630 laptop works fine and is totally updated, except for the kernel which dates from 2005-04 (I think, or maybe older). my internet works fine as long as I stick with the 2.6.15.6-kanotix-1 kernel. whenever I have tried going to a newer kernel (either via kernel update or by a fresh install), my wireless internet breaks and cannot be fixed.

I think you mentioned you have a homemade system, so I don't know if you have the same type of problem, but an easy way to check is to install RC-4 and then downgrade the kernel to whatever you are using right now.

Kernel 2.6.14 would break udev. Not possible to downgrad kernel on Easter RC4.

@corwin: if, what piper told you does not work, the smc has also a security-feature callded MAC-Control.
This is the place to insert the Mac from your Netcard, and than let the router allow access from this card.

MAC Address

Thnx for clearance, I wrote the short-form. Some Router can do this. ex. Digitus DI-604 MAC-Controll for in and out. Paketfiltering in and out, domainfiltering, portfiltering in and out.

Some routers can only duplicate the MAC-address to simulate only one pc. Great for foul ISP's which will not allow more than 1 PC at their network.

Alot of things non-computer need a MAC address also such as a set-top-box for your TV to recieve TV channels for example, some camera's, web cam's etc.. (when hooked up to computer). Not all network cards supports MAC address cloning, most of "todays cards" do.
